Several modern accelerator facilities have been set up in India for basic and applied research during the past 5 decades. Indian scientists have been able to carry out excellent accelerator-based research at these as well as international facilities. Applications of accelerators in healthcare and industry have also grown in recent years. There is a strong realization now, at all levels, that a quantum jump needs to be given to the field of accelerator science and technology in India to fulfil the aspirations of the research community to be at par internationally in our areas of strength. Applications in industry and healthcare also have to grow substantially to benefit the common man. In this article an analysis of the methodology and logic behind the evolution of our accelerator programme has been presented. More importantly, recommendations have been given for gainfully implementing a rather ambitious programme that is proposed to be taken up in the next few decades.Keywords

For the people of Pithoragarh and Chamoli - some of whom are yet to recover from the pain of the earlier disasters - the events of Friday, 30 June 2016 were only familiar messengers of death, destruction and mourning. If the trend of the last couple of decades is any indicator, every monsoon season is certain to cause floods and landslides, load rivers, bury people alive, block roads and highways, and bring life in the state to a grinding halt.Full Text

During the past over 50 years, India has been constructing and setting up several particle accelerator facilities for scientiststo carry out frontline basic and applied research. Significant amount of investment has been made and the trend, fortunately, continues. Our scientists and technologists have acquired excellent expertise todesign and build challenging accelerators and related systems. The expertise is now being utilized to carry out R&D on particle accelerators for accelerator-driven systems for nuclear power-related applications. In this article, a strong case has been made to intensify as well as diversify our efforts to develop small accelerators and systems for societal, industrial and environmental applications. Justifications for the availability of expertise and the strong need for the proposed developments in the country have also been provided.Full Text
